PLOT (3,5):
Finally, I make myself known back in this kind of articles on the blog: aren't you happy?
I am here again to butcher the English language, so let's start.
First of all, I wanted to thank my friend Emily for sending me this in exchange of honest review; I was extremely excited of finally reading one of her books and I really hope to also be able to read soon her other book "Fortress of Wolves".
And since I am an extremely positive person, I'll start with the flaws I found, starting from a rushed first part, which brought an incomplete world-building, in fact you are left with a lot of question through the entire book.
I can see why the rush and incompleteness of the first part, knowing what comes next, which actually was extremely better than this first part, the one before the plot-twist; still I would have preferred a more complete and attentively written world, in order to give a better background to the story.
As I said the story changes completely when the plot-twist appears, and I have to say that I kind of expected it to happen, but the way it happened shocked me enough to say it was an extremely calculated and perfectly inserted plot-twist, which changed perfectly the atmosphere of the book, allowing us to delve into deeper themes.
I also do feel like the plot-twist gave us a totally different idea of what light and darkness are and how little they mean when you are talking about people and not symbols (also I do have to say I have a soft spot for the "Dark Team" of this book, they are just all too cute).
I do love Jessamine's behavior after everything that happened to her, I found it extremely fitting and in character and long the right amount to feel real and help you understand what the character is going through; also, I do have to say I am a fan of slow and careful healing, instead of a swift and reckless one,
This is not an action-packed story, but it has so much more than that, a romance tale, in a fantasy world, where everything isn't as it seems and mostly the light can be as cruel as the darkness.
(Also, this book contains sexual scenes, and a little trigger warning for rape and violence).
